Miss Fortune eBook Albina Hume Reviews

Miss Fortune is a touching, heartfelt memoir; one I will read over and over again. It is an inspirational book about chasing dreams, finding oneself, and not giving up despite overwhelming obstacles.

From a Ukrainian village behind the iron curtain to an exotic animal ranch in South Africa, Albina Hume takes you on this mesmerizing, romantic journey. Shakespeare once said "The course of true love never did run smooth.” In Miss Fortune, we find this to be true not only for love but also for the pursuit of happiness.

Albina describes the many paths she took, from childhood fears, a jail cell, through bad relationships, enduring one disappointment after another, and yet through it all, she kept her optimism and faith in life and humanity. It is this belief, as well as her belief in herself, that pulled her through many dreadful situations; some which many of us could not survive.

For some this memoir may be a case study on how to turn misfortunes into fortune. For others it may be a captivating tale of the trails and tribulations of a young woman. For me it was simply fascinating reading, that which I’ll be thinking about for a long time to come.

We all search. Albina searched and found. By the end of the book I realized it is not easy to find true fortune; how true fortune is something you can only gain in the heart.
"Miss Fortune" by Albina Hume is a very well written autobiography. In this novel length work of non-fiction we are privileged to become acquainted with Ms. Hume and her interesting and misadventure filled young life.
I will mention at the outset that, as other reviewers have noted, English is a non-native tongue to the author. Despite this fact the writing in this story is seamless, and Ms. Hume's use of the language excellent. As expected with this type of autobiographical work, dialog is more internal than external and the tale is written from the author's first-person point of view.
The story opens with a scene from the present day, with our heroine eagerly anticipating her incipient wedding to the love of her life, John. As she dwells on this upcoming happy event she begins to muse upon the strange series of events that brought her, a young girl born in the Ukraine just prior to the break-up of the Soviet Union, to her current circumstances on a exotic animal ranch in South Africa. The reader senses immediately that this will be an intriguing tale and we are certainly not disappointed. We are transported back with Albina to her childhood village, and as the circumstances of her early life unfold we come to understand just how challenging that life was. Albina and her family are in some sense caught up in a great societal transition as their world and society are buffeted by the forces of political turmoil. Thru all of the challenges Albina keeps a clear eye on her dream and displays both tenacity and at times great courage in pursuing it.
I gave this autobiography a rating of four stars. The writing was excellent and the telling of the story at times superb. Where this effort lost points was in the lack of proper editing, there was just too much detail at times to to the point of tedium, and the characters, while interesting, largely remain one-dimensional and undeveloped from their initial sketch. Overall I enjoyed this read and I would highly recommend it!
Albina Hume’s memoir takes the reader from her close family in Eastern Europe’s Ukraine to South Africa with numerous detours along the way. It is a world totally unfamiliar to me as an American, albeit a well-traveled woman, still the road taken was one I could only think about in terms of having faced the devil and surviving due to Albina’s inner compass knowing right from wrong and having a spine of steel.
As a young girl, Albina, was raised on fairy tales and dreams of leaving her small village to marry a well-established man. Her dreams were to have the love of her life provide for her, their children, and to be surrounded by close family and friends. Her search beginning at age 18 was at first impeded by having to pay debts from a business venture gone bad, and eventually led her to the shadowy world of illegal border crossings, unscrupulous smugglers and dancing in strip clubs in Greece.
It is a tribute to the author that this tale of struggle is told in a fresh, honest and humble voice that had me follow her at every turn wanting to help her back to safety.
Was it bad luck, a series of wrong choices or a trusting nature that led a self-conscious young girl to finally, as a young woman, achieve her dreams? To me it is a celebration of spirit and a belief that dreams can come true.
