Unexpected events make their voyages not always ‘plain-sailing.’ Will they succeed in returning safely home to Norway with what they have gained – or lose everything ?
Loosely based on a brief entry in one of the Icelandic Sagas this tale of the sea and the Vikings who sailed it is set in 869 when Harald was fighting to unify Norway, Guthrum was fighting to conquer England and Alfred was fighting for his life.

The first time I read this first part of the Ingimund saga I couldn't stop reading! It is fast paced, cliffhangers at the end of many capitals and well versed. Robert Speed is a man who knows what he's talking about. He studied Viking boats extensively and takes you into them on adventure. He is a good historian with the fantasy to spin a yarn, what more do you want in historic fiction?The psychological depth of his characters is not great, but on re-reading the book I discovered that it would have drawn me away from Bob's intention: telling about Viking ships and their use, against a historic background.
A good book for those who love historical fiction and a rare subject to write about: read it.
A must-read for those who study the developement of boats in different times and circumstances. Bob has an uncanny gift to show you how form follows function in these infamous raiders. At the same time he gives us an insight in their way of life and their intent to act as they did and you are left with respect for Ingimund and his men. They sought not only plunder, but fame, and they get it here!

An awesome Viking tale of young warriors on their first trip a Viking. Very good story, well told, with a good ending and a great set up for the next book.
